La Tomatina Festival
SHOEBACCA.com’s friends at adidas have a line of shoes known as the “Flavours of the World” editions. They celebrate actual flavors, sure, but they also highlight unique places and events as well. Think of the collection as a trip around the world without the cramped flights and cumbersome power convertors.
Last Wednesday in Spain, the La Tomatina festival took place in the town of Bunol. Ever been to a town that has 9,000 residents? Picture that place, with narrower streets and then throw 40,000 people in the mix. Add about 45 tons of ripe tomatoes, and you’ve got a saucy adventure that has been around since the end of World War II, and always happens on the last Wednesday of August.
People from all over the planet flock to this small town for this event. The reasons vary from a need to experience something wild to a deep hatred for ripe tomatoes, but when the food fight begins, it’s every one for themselves!
Traditionally, there is a ham atop a greased up pole, and whoever gets the ham first starts the fight. You can imagine that it takes a while to climb that slick stick, so the fight is officially fired off with the use of water cannons. The fight lasts for one hour, and then the water cannons signal the end of the battle. Everyone wanders away covered with nature’s baseball, and everyone has a smile on their face.
They might head to the Bunol River to wash off, or residents might delight in soaking the participants as they pass by. Fire trucks clear the streets with water from a Roman aquaduct, and everyone goes home and puts on their awesome adidas Flavours of the World La Tomatina edition shoes, swearing they’ll never eat another tomato in their life.
Now that the festival has passed, it’s time to celebrate this senseless massacre of tomatoes with adidas’ fresh-from-the-vine offerings and SHOEBACCA.com!
Take a look at the adidas Country 73 men’s retro shoes. They offer a sleek leather upper that is embossed with tiny tomatoes. They’re throwbacks to classic runners, but with the unique style twist of the Flavours of the World series.
No, that’s not it. We’ve got an entirely different edition that adidas was kind enough to throw out. Taking the retro from the way back to the more recent, the adidas ZX 9000 Lux men’s retro shoes offer a leather and synthetic upper that couples with a sturdy heel cup for support. These bad boys are a bit more overt with their tomato love, showing design touches on the toe and tongue. Plenty of flavor!
